Community Outreach
The purpose of the Outreach Team at First United Methodist Church is to identify opportunities for outreach and to engage in and support service activities and projects. We seek to make a difference in the lives of others - to connect with our neighbors, promote awareness of our church, share the gospel, and spread the faith by exemplifying the compassion, justice and mercy of Christ in the world.
Members of First United Methodist Church are involved in mission projects throughout the year, helping to spread the message of God’s love and care. Such projects include the following:
BACK-TO-SCHOOL PARTY
Held in August, children from the surrounding community are invited to the church for an afternoon of games and free food. Each child is given a bag of school supplies (pencils, crayons, paper, erasers, etc.)
BOY SCOUTS
Troop 754 is open to boys in the community and sponsored by FUMC United Methodist Men.
CHAMP(Citizens Helping American Military Personnel)
This is a mail mission for American soldiers serving overseas. Packages of small items such as candy, gum, lotions, magazines, condiments and toiletries are collected, packaged, and mailed to the soldiers.
CHRISTMAS PROJECTS
Each year, FUMC participates in programs to provide gifts for the less fortunate. In the past, items of clothing for both adults and children have been collected, along with new toys for children of specific age groups.
COMMUNITY CARE FUND
Each year, FUMC participates in programs to provide gifts for the less fortunate. In the past, items of clothing for both adults and children have been collected, along with new toys for children of specific age groups.
ELEMENTARY READING PROGRAM
Volunteers spend an hour each week reading to children at selected elementary schools.
FESTIVAL OF SHARING
Each fall, FUMC holds a drive to collect items to be included in health kits, personal hygiene kits, sewing kits, layettes and baby kits, prison kits, and school kits. Items include such essentials as soap, pencils, diapers, washcloths, and toothbrushes. The items are packaged and are then distributed to low-income homes in Missouri and mission hospitals throughout the world.
FOOD PANTRY SUNDAY
Members of FUMC bring donations of non-perishable food items or cash to designated bins at the church on the third Sunday of each month. The donations are then given to FISH, a local organization which assist in meeting the needs of the less fortunate.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Construction was completed on the Methodist House at the Enclaves of Eisenhower subdivision in St. Peters last fall. We were part of a coalition of Methodist churches in St. Charles County providing volunteers for this project, to build homes in St. Charles County.
KIDS SHARING CLOSET
This ministry works with our local elementary school counselors and nurses to provide basic food, clothing and school supplies for St. Charles School District families who are in need.
LABOR READY
Church members prepare brown bag lunches once a week for day workers working through Labor Ready in St. Charles.
NEIGHBORHOOD ACTION
This is a community outreach program that seeks to minister to people, primarily elderly or disabled, on a limited income, who lives in the neighborhood(s) around the church and who need assistance with maintaining their homes, or with small tasks for helping with daily life. This is an opportunity for hands-on service to our community.
SEWING CLUB
This group of United Methodist Women makes a variety of items for mission in the u.S. and through the world.
SHOWERS OF BLESSING
FUMC provides homeless individuals in the St. Charles community showers, light snacks, and fellowship weekly on Wednesdays.
PRISON MINISTRIES
FUMC is currently involved in "Kairos", whose mission is to bring Christ's love and forgiveness to all incarcerated individuals, their families, and those who work with them, and to assist in the transition to becoming a productive citizen. Our involvement ranges anywhere from working on an "inside" team, an "outside" team, green agape (money), baking cookies, writing letters, making placemats, attending a closing service, and prayer. For more information, contact Dave Raposo at (636) 284-9328.
