Risk Taking Mission and Service

A report on the Mission/Community Outreach Services provided and supported by the Congregation of First United Methodist Church, St. Charles, MO, in 2008.

“Risk taking Mission and Service includes the projects, the efforts, and work people do to make a positive difference in the lives of others for the purposes of Christ…”- Bishop Richard Schnase, Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church

Do you know how much the congregation of FUMC in St. Charles does in the way of community outreach and mission, in serving the Lord, by serving those who are less fortunate? You have touched the lives of hundreds of people through your donations and hands-on volunteer efforts.

The following are mission, outreach, and service activities in which FUMC members have participated through their gifts and their labor. Each of these programs or activities offers an opportunity for service to others.

Community Care Fund

At the beginning of each month, people who are desperately in need come to the church requesting help. This fund helps with those needs (utility bills, gasoline, etc.). There are rules and qualifiers so that the fund is used judiciously. The distribution is overseen by staff and volunteers. This year almost $18,000 was distributed, assisting 269 individuals/households. Money for the Fund comes from several sources: a church budget line item; 75% of grocery card sale profits; and individual donations. 2009 will see a growing number of people requesting help.

Showers of Blessing

Every week on Wednesday, homeless men and women are picked up at the Salvation Army center and transported to the church via the church bus. At the church they are able to get a shower, a change of clothing, light snacks and fellowship. On average, 10-15 homeless men and women are helped with this ministry each week. This ministry was cited by Bishop Schnase in his recent book, The Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations. This program could easily be expanded to include a Saturday ministry.

Labor Ready

SAM (Senior Adult Ministry) members prepare brown bag lunches, once a week, for day workers working through Labor Ready in St. Charles. Since its inception in June, approximately 1480 migrant workers have been provided with lunch.
