GIVE THANKS….
By Rev. Robin Roderick

Give Thanks…..
For God’s work in this place

Paul, in his letters, often includes a prayer of Thanksgiving for those to whom he is writing.

For example in Philippians 1:3 he says, “I thank my God for you every time I think of you.”

Before we surge into the season of anticipation and wonder; before we head out for Black Friday sales; before we begin the New Year which for the church begins on Nov. 27th; our nation asks us to do what Christians are called to do each and every day. Give thanks with a grateful heart.

We give thanks at FUMC for all those faithfully praying and discerning God’s will for their lives and what it means to be a church doing the will of God first and foremost; for those in elected leadership and all those who work so joyfully in the ministries; for the behind the scenes folks who want no face time; for those willing to put their face and name with the passionate pursuit of faithfulness; for those willing to say yes to new things; for those willing to question best practices; for those who love us even when we are not perfect; for the family of God in this place.

We have much to be thankful for….how would you expand this list of Thanksgiving for FUMC ?

READ THE BIBLE TOGETHER
by Rev. Robin Roderick

Let’s read through the Bible together. You may have done it. You may have said it was a good idea and never managed to get around to it. The “it” is to read through the entire Bible in a year. Our church year begins on November 27th, the first day of Advent. Won’t you join me and others in reading through the bible in a year?

It was Flannery O’Conner who said, “we live in a Christ haunted culture,” and Ben Witherington the III who added to that phrase, “but we are biblically illiterate.” Hmmm…not perhaps illiterate, but to be encompassed by the entire witness of scripture is important. All the stuff—what seems odd, different or too complex to make the Sunday morning lectionary.

So would you join together, use the copied ‘through the bible in a year’ plan or go to one of the on- line tutorials such as biblegateway.com —and let’s soak in the word.

2012 JOPLIN VIM TRIP
by FUMC

Nehemiah started out as a cup bearer and went on to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Will you join us as we rebuild Joplin? Words cannot describe what we felt during our time in Joplin. It was a rewarding experience. Our next Volunteers In Mission trip is scheduled for March 25-30, 2012.

Projects are moving towards rebuilding and repairing homes of families who lost nearly everything as a result of the storm. Organizers of construction projects are looking for both skilled and non-skilled volunteers but are in dire need of licensed electricians and plumbers, framers, roofers, and drywall hangers and finishers.

This year at FUMC we have been motivated to become better stewards and generous givers. Let the messages you have heard move you to give your time and your resources to help rebuild Joplin. Take a week of vacation. Sacrifice to serve during Lent. As you are blessing others you will be blessed beyond belief.

More information coming regarding 2012 Joplin VIM trip. Contact Rev. Debby at revdebby@fumcstcharles.org for more information regarding our VIM Trip.

COATS & SHOES FOR KIDS
by Trudy McCormick and Terry Tate

When asked if our church could help the local Elementary Schools who are in desperate need of shoes and coats for their children, FUMC and the UMW answered with a resounding, "Yes we can!" As a congregation we gathered 60 winter coats, 34 pairs of shoes, 46 jackets and sweatshirts, 7 pairs of socks and 24 hats and gloves! These were distributed to Lincoln and Null Elementary schools. When this situation was presented to the UMW executive board, the response was to give $800 from their mission fund plus a $121 love offering collected at their last meeting.  The fact that there were children in our own neighborhood  in that much need, was totally unacceptable to people of compassion. The very next morning two UMW members went shopping and later that day they delivered 28 pairs of shoes,18 winter coats, 7 packages of underwear, and 4 packages of socks directly to Blackhurst School.  As they were bringing in their purchases, a teacher said that she had given the counselor the name of a little girl that morning.  “She showed me her torn, ragged shoes and told me that they were all that she had.”  The teacher left to get the child’s shoe size. What a statement of compassion from our church and UMW! Praise be to God!
